Maybe he could even bring a concert hall to cave in with this left hand – it is like a whip, or like an immense storm that suddenly breaks out over harmonically floating clouds. A stage-thunder or perhaps rather: a divine roar. Whoever owns such a left hand no longer needs an orchestra. The pianist McCoy Tyner once described his role in John Coltrane’s classic quartet as “I had to give the quartet its fullness of sound”. “Or, as John liked to say, the density and full tone.” Tyner was part of a musical revolution from 1960 to 1965. Since the beginning of the 60ties, he also played as the leader in own bands and, of course, took it up with all those of standing and reputation. His style, these nearly transitionless changes from melodic finesse to primitive force, from filigree to spaciality, from lyric feel to primal force developed during his time with Coltrane which he then continued and refined. He creates from tradition with all his innovative power and through his form-blasting polyphone chord voicings one can make out all the jazz from previous decades. Tyner was already guest at Enjoy Jazz in 2004 – and we can now once again look forward to the legendary pianist.
