It really means something that the celebrated saxophonist Chris Potter got carried away to such a hymn of praise: “I'm impressed by her confident command of the jazz language, her thorough knowledge of harmony, and most of all, by her ability to truly sing through her horn.” The talk is of Tineke Postma, born 1978 in the Netherlands, who has risen to the vanguard of young saxophonists. Her new album “The Traveller” presents a classical, well-rehearsed quartet with brilliant musicians: Geri Allen on the piano, Scott Colley on the bass and Terri Lyne Carrington on the percussions. Postma’s own compositions show effervescent musical imaginativeness, nourished by her love for the heroes of the genre. Wayne Shorter, Cannonball Adderly and, last but not least, John Coltrane count to her paragons. Perhaps it is this special proximity to classic, energy laden, modern jazz bordering on freer forms that accounts for the impulsive sound images in Postma’s play. It is remarkable that she doesn’t let herself get intimidated by her models: She has gone her own way for which she has been awarded appropriate prizes; and critics enthuse that she has her “own graceful style”. We can look forward to what it will sound like live when she “sings” through her saxophone.
