Bibi Tanga & The Selenites

With some music, one can make out the biography of its producer: with Bienvenue, otherwise known as “Bibi” Tanga, one can sense that he has seen a lot of the world: a diplomat’s son whose family comes from the Central African Republic and at some point settled down in Paris. His early life stations were France, Belgium, Germany, Russia and the USA. Correspondingly, his musical system also knows no boundaries. “I love disco, funk, soul reggae and R&B”, Bibi Tanga once said. “It's all like a big library to me. I feel like there's this heritage of black music from around the world, and I'm the heir to it.” He made full use of this as can be heard on his third album “Dunya”, which means as much as “existence”. With his well-rehearsed band The Selenites and his comrade-in-arms Le Professeur Inlassable who has an internalised chair for sound bricolage, he celebrates the marriage of afro-futuristic funk rhythms with swinging soul. As an “ambassador of funk” he is now again travelling around the world – and is at home everywhere.
