Habib Koité is a star and not only in his home country Mali. The guitarist and singer performed in the Letterman-Show, the Rolling Stone dedicated a big story to him. It surely has to do with his musical openness that he tours the whole of the world with his band Bamada: his style is not only fed by diverse influences from his country - he integrates the most different forms all the way to reggae and flamenco. The mixture of traditional awareness and curiosity, paired with virtuous guitar playing and his voice make Habib Koité’s play so suggestive. This applies no less to his fellow performers on this Acoustic Africa Evening: Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe is also committed to his roots but nonetheless his music proliferates into many directions. In the mid-70ties he started with Band Wagon Wheel, and now he is one of the most renowned artists in his country - even a music direction is named after his nickname: Tuku music. Like Koité, Afel Bocoum also comes from Mali. At 13 he was already part of Ali Farka Toure's group ASCO. In the 80ties after his agricultural studies, he used his songs to convey new knowledge on watering techniques to the people. Bocoum is also famous outside of Mali, and has, for example, worked together with Damon Albarn. An exciting evening with three exceptional musicians!
