When Roger Willemsen speaks, he always formulates an attitude towards the world. Last year Insa Wilke wrote this about Roger Willemsen’s performance at the Enjoy Jazz Festival: There is, in fact, hardly anyone for whom form and content, the capacity for and awakening of enthusiasm, perception and spiritual penetration of the observed object go hand in hand in such a way: “He conveys pleasure of the moment, has the gift of showing the pure sadness and pure happiness which others leave behind in childhood.” All these wonderful qualities of the gifted speaker and listener could be experienced over the last years in his Enjoy Jazz series “My Favourite Things”. For three hours (or perhaps even longer) Roger Willemsen does nothing except play his favourite jazz records - and narrate stories, give anecdotes or speak of music history. It has become a Jour Fixe of the Festival: the coming together of like-minded that want to be filled with enthusiasm and stimulation, and be carried away into the music. Willemsen speaks so precisely, so sensitively about jazz that one can already hear the sound of the next piece before it comes out of the amplifier. So one thing is clear: This evening will linger on, and on the next day one will undoubtedly go to one’s entrusted CD store with a long list of titles…
