Adrian Belew: g, voc
Julie Slick: b
Marco Minnemann: dr
No, the sawing, whirring guitar sounds in Davie Bowie’s studio version of the song of the century, “Heroes”, do not come from Adrian Belew, but from Robert Fripp and Carlos Alomar. But the direction is correct! After Belew, born in 1949, was introduced to larger audiences as a member of the Frank Zappa Band during the “Sheik Yerbouti” phase at the end of the 70’s, he later, in 1978, belonged to the Bowie entourage that presented the “Heroes” live. It can be heard on the ever magnificent album “Stage”. The following turn of the decade, from the 70’s to the 80’s, must have been a tremendous creative experience for Belew. Prominently at the side of Brian Enos, he was first involved in changing the art rock band Talking Heads into a funky new-wave afro-beat band. Belew’s guitar could also be heard in the side project Tom Tom club, though there were atmospheric disturbances between the musicians. Then he encountered Robert Fripp and became a full-time member of the prog rock legend King Crimson as a singer and guitarist. Because King Crimson only got reconceptualised and revitalised at irregular intervals, Belew had plenty of time to follow his diverse interests as a composer, arranger, instrumentalist, and as a singer - solo as well as in various formations such as The Bears. Since 2006, he has been extensively touring at the side of siblings Julie (bass) and Eric Slick (percussions) as the Adrian Belew Power Trio, and plays an extraordinary mixture of cleverly reduced, highly dynamic prog rock and Beatles pop. As an instrumentalist, Adrian Belew has created an unmistakeable sound, full of virtuously processed electronic effects and noise-attacks which can be heard on countless albums such as by Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, Nine Inch Nails as well as Mike Oldfield amongst others.
