Chucho Valdes & The Afro-Cuban Messengers

“I learned virtuosity from Oscar Peterson, percussion approaches and quart layering from McCoy Tyner and lyricism from Bill Evans”: Equipped with this, Chucho Valdés, born in 1941 in Havana into a musical family, became the most important and most comprehensive pianist, not only in Cuba but in all of South America. From early on, Valdés followed the obvious but also the most hidden lines of connection between Afro-Cuban and American music, between Latin-American rhythms and advanced jazz forms. At the age of three he already sat at the piano, later he visited the conservatory and was musical director of the Club Tropicana. With the band Irakere, he succeeded in Montreux and New York in the late 70’s and has counted as a master of his instrument - which plays with strong dynamic gesture, overwhelming passion and a sheerly inexhaustible talent for variation - ever since. He has been in contract with Blue Note Records since the 80’s and been experienced on stage mainly with smaller formations or in solo. Now he will be coming to the Enjoy Jazz Festival with The Afro-Cuban Messengers.
