Harold López-Nussa Trio

Already as a small child, he was always listening to music, Harold López-Nussa once said. “Music surrounded me – it is a part of my life.” This is no wonder when one takes a look at López-Nussa’s family: Mother was a piano teacher, father and brother are famous percussionists, and uncle Ernán an important pianist. The 27-year-old followed in his uncle’s footsteps, but by now these seem to have long become too small for him: Harold López-Nussa is a star himself, and he has the unique gift of connecting traditional Cuban rhythms to formal liberties of jazz piano. Not to forget his classical training, which definitely leaves its marks in his play. This makes him special amongst the many gifted young pianists that have stepped into the limelight in the last years – last but not least also at the Enjoy Jazz Festival. The public first became aware of López-Nussa in 2005 at the Piano Competition for upcoming artists in Montreux, where he enraptured the audience and won first prize. A solo CD followed. Last year, “Herencia” came out; a fascinating trio recording with his brother Ruy López-Nussa on percussion and Felipe Cabrera, who frequently plays with Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s band, on bass. It is an album that depicts the different influences in López-Nussa’s music in a fascinating way: his sense of Latin jazz, his love of American jazz, his fascination with classical music.
