A rolling stone gathers no moss! In April 2010 Herbie Hancock celebrated his 70th birthday. “So what”, he will say and continue to concoct ambitious projects. Artistic recognition and commercial success have playfully gone hand in hand for Hancock since “Watermelon Man” (1960): at the side of Miles Davis, with own fusion bands and hip hop experiments like “Rockit”. Lately Hancock radically decoupled album releases and live presence. Ambitious albums like “Possibilites” and “River”: the “Joni Letters” stand for themselves while Hancock presents young talents and creates from the fund of his rich past. The recordings for “The Imagine Project” – his optimistic vision of globalisation - congregated more than a dozen superstars from differnent cultural circles in studios on four continents. Chaka Khan to The Chieftains through to Oumou Sangare. Of course such a powerful logistic act cannot be reporduced live, but that is exactly the thrill for a ‘Freigeist’ like Herbie Hancock. It was about a gesture of openness, tolerance and curiousity. “I am rooted in jazz, but feel at home in pop, R&B, folk, and hip hop to the same degree”, he explained in an interview.
