Whoever spontaneously or prematurely calls out “Norah Jones” or “Katie Melua” upon listening to the quiet and harmonious melancholy songs by Swedish Sophie Zelmani, careful! To counter, we gently point out that Zelmani already has a euphonious “Best of” album. It was released in 2005, and it is not without reason that the title is “A Decade of Dreams 1995-2005”, because it draws a balance of the singer’s first five albums. In the booklet, the photographer Anton Corbijn, befriended with Zelmani, who lives on a secluded Swedish island, enthuses: “Hearing Sophie sing is like being wrapped up in a velvet blanket and being brought back to ground-level simultaneously; basically, kind of a description for heaven on earth.” Although Zelmani stuck to the wise saying “Never change a winning team” after “A Decade of Dreams” and procured her very own style – concerts and interviews were very rare –, she has clearly increased her output frequency: three albums in only five years. Her spring 2010 album “I’m the Rain” sounds like what Zelmani’s fans want her to sound like: gentle, harmonious, melancholy – reliable!
