From the West Coast to Kingsway via Broadway seems to be a long way, especially for a classic jazz quartet. Root 70 clearly proves that, on a musical map, one can draw comprehensible connection lines between these places, and wander up and down along them with courageous steps. In well-over ten years of playing together, Nils Wogram on the trombone, Hayden Crisholm on the saxophone, Matt Penman on the bass and Jochen Rückert on the percussion have extended their repertoire from cool jazz to straight ahead jazz and blues, as well as from blues to dub adaptations by the Cologne electronic technician Burnt Friedman. It’s about getting on the tracks of the quartet’s specific sound-intimacy, on the other side of proof of virtuosity, about creating a dense structure where soloist and group play can no longer be differentiated. Now one happily follows the four musicians anywhere: to “52nd Street” as well as into rhythmic realms of reggae. One could call Root 70’s work conceptual. Everything that they set about doing bears a special idea within. The order of experiments is everything except slavish: it becomes broken up when they combine and transferred into an openness that makes this quartet, with its versatile band leader and composer Nils Wogram, into one of the currently most thrilling bands.
