It is by all means meaningful that the four LebiDerya musicians met at the Oriental Music Academy in the multi-cultural district Jungbusch in Mannheim. Their music also speaks of encounters between different cultures. It could perhaps be described as inquisitive, unusually orchestrated ethno-jazz, influenced strongly by European chamber music and oriental folklore. Here, the oriental zither kanun meets bass clarinet, trumpet and flugelhorn and receives reinforcement from the drums.
LebiDerya, the name of the band, means “at the edge of the ocean” – a fitting and poetic name to describe where water and mainland meet, and where cultures and things flow into each other and mix. After LebiDerya was a guest at Enjoy Jazz in 2010, the band released the album “Orientation”, which was received very positively by critics. Comparisons with classics like Oregon und Codona have been made, but these touch on the gentleness in LebiDerya’s music only in parts.
