On the evening of 4 November 2007 at the Mannheim Schlosskirche, the trio Mediæval, accompanied by percussionist Birger Mistereggen, enraptured its audience with its programme. It had in part ancient Norwegian “folk songs” which to date have only been delivered by word of mouth. Their current album, “A Worchester Ladymass” with ancient music from the 13th and 14th century was awarded the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik” in autumn 2011. The booklet of the album reads: “The Trio Mediæval senses that performing ancient music in this day and age allows the imagination and ideas to flow, as if contemporary music is being played“. This year, they will be accompanied by trumpeter and sound researcher Arve Henriksen, which will cater for trips from Gregorian and early polyphony into “sample based”, highly contemporary improvisations. It is not all far-fetched to compare this to the Hilliard Ensemble and Jan Garbarek, and not just because both projects are deeply anchored in “ECM”.
