Those who have experienced Archie Shepp at his Enjoy Jazz performances over the last years got to know different facets of the musician each time: for example, he presented his political record “Attica Blues”, a mixture of soul and funk, swing and bepop together with a big band and rapper Yasiin Bey in 2015. Last year, together with his fantastic quintet, he revered John Coltrane. His warm, occasionally hissing-raw tone, which he trained with Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, is recognisable from the first note. His reconnection to Afro-American traditions, which could already be sensed in the wild free jazz phase of the 60s, constitutes another consistent feature. Since the 70s, his engagement with gospel and blues has become a programmatic element. For his 80th birthday, which Shepp celebrated in May this year, he will now bestow himself and us with a special concert that primarily traces his art back to the roots of his childhood: The evening, called “Art Songs and Spirituals”, is a coproduction of the Jazz à la Villette in the Philharmonie de Paris and Enjoy Jazz festivals. Shepp’s companions Hamid Drake and Amina Claudine Myers, and young talents like Carl Henri Morisset and Olivier Miconi and a gospel choir consisting of eight singers are part of the team. It won’t be prayerful but certainly moving
