On 23 September 2016 John Coltrane would have turned 90. This is reason enough to honour his music with a »Tribute« at the Festival finale. And who could do this better than the person Coltrane mentored, and for whom Coltrane got a contract with “impulse!” in 1964? The person who thanked with the album classic “Four For Trane” and with that took a bow in front of “Giant Steps”? Archie Shepp, who not only follows Coltrane’s footsteps musically but also politically, will be on stage with a band he has lined up himself. Both musician have in common that they let cultures interflow through the music as well as through the musicians they select. At the time, bassist Reggie Workman was already Shepp’s side, just as he had been at Coltrane’s in the early 60ies. This evening, the giants Shepp and Workman will be accompanied by the promising contemporary jazz musicians Jason Moran, Nasheet Waits and Amir ElSaffar. Everything has been very well set for a creative »Tribute«, especially because Archie Shepp recognised that “Only Coltrane can sound like Coltrane!” early on.
