On 6 May 2016, wonderful Johannes Bauer sadly died of cancer in Berlin. How often did we see this friendly and mindful trombonist on stage? With Doppelmoppel, Futch, the Globe Unity Orchestra, Bauer 4 and the Chicago Tentet, and also with Peter Brötzmann, Barry Guy and Tony Oxley. Dancing, laughing and full of musical enthusiasm. Erwin Ditzner, whose birthday is on 5 May, also played with Johannes Bauer on several occasions and, after he heard the sad news, instinctively knew to whom he would dedicate his traditional Festival Carte Blanche this year. He had already planned on working together with Danish saxophonist Lotte Anker who recorded an album with Marilyn Crispell and most recently with Fred Frith, and had played in Bauer’s new quartet since 2014. And for Louis Rastig, son of Conny Bauer, this is a family matter – he has lost his uncle Johannes. And Ditzner has been sharing the stage with Sebastian Gramss for ages. The improvisations o this concert evening will be played in and dedicated to the spirit of Johannes Bauer.
