Tenor saxophonist Carlos Miyares is amazingly skilled at combining different styles of playing lightly and playfully. It sounds like Coltrane traditions with gentle dancing tones and Caribbean rhythms. Carlos Miyares, born 1980 in Santiago de Cuba, started playing piano at the age of seven and then changed to the saxophone, the instrument that permitted him to develop his own musical voice, four years later. He has played with numerous Cuban musicians and an important milestone in his career was in 2008, when he toured half the world with Chucho Valdés’ band Afro-Cuban Messengers. He was also involved in “Chucho’s Steps” which won a Grammy for the Best Latin Jazz Album. His playing is outstanding, as can be heard in his first solo album “Chucho Valdés Presenta a Carlos Miyares” (2010) and now, almost ten years later, he has fully stepped out of Valdés’ supporting shadow.
