Attentive Enjoy Jazz visitors will know: this snapshot of a young London scene is impressively dynamic. The septet Kokoroko, a creative melange with shadings of jazz, Caribbean roots, and/or modern bass music stands for Afrobeat. “We specialise in a soul shaking, horn fueled sound with West African roots and Inner London hues.” According to the band, Afrobeat is underrepresented in the scene and they reference Fela Kuti as their great inspiration. Their signature track “Abusey Junction” (a debut with over 30 million clicks on YouTube!) starts slowly, as does »careerwise«. The pieces are developed live and tested over a long period of time before they go into the recording studio. In spring 2019, Kokoroko released an EP with three new tracks. We are sure the sound will open up to new influences in future, because with three self-confident women on horns at the front of the stage, sticking to traditional Afrobeat-Fela Kuti simply cannot be a long-term option.
