Labels and definitions are not his thing. Saxophonist Ben Wendel, born in Vancouver but living in New York for a long time, is one of the founding members of the refreshingly undogmatic band Kneebody, whose jazz line-up switches between fusion, post-rock and hip-hop. On the other hand, his performances as a sideman range from Tigran Hamasyan to Taylor Eigsti and Prince to Snoop Dogg and Daedelus. Still to be discovered in this country are the works Wendel releases under his own name. Here, too, he shows himself to be an outstanding soloist inspired by Chris Potter and Tim Garland, but at the same time a composer who always manages to shape his eclecticism into a convincing whole. His current, fifth album "High Heart" not only features a prominent cast (Shai Maestro, Gerald Clayton, Nate Wood), but is also reminiscent of the fusion jazz of the early 1970s in terms of tempo, dynamics and refinement. Moreover, the ambitious inclusion of original vocalist Michael Mayo creates an atmosphere that made critics think of Pat Metheny's epic compositions or Wayne Shorter's classic "Native Dancer". Fittingly, Wendel has "framed" his music, which seems urgent, with liner notes that are a politically alert reflection on the role of art and culture and their changes in the sign of digitalisation and the desolidarisation of the social.
