Over the course of almost a decade, it has become a small tradition for Enjoy Jazz to host a prizewinner concert during which winners of the renowned SWR-Jazzpreis, worth 15,000, are awarded their prizes. This year, the Jury nominated drummer and composer Eva Klesse, a university professor who lives in Leipzig and teaches at the Hanover University of Music. She was born in North Rhine Westphalia in 1986, studied jazz drumming in Leipzig, Weimar, Paris and New York and is currently playing in the Julia Hülsmann Octet, the Quartet Trillmann and in the Jorinde Jelen Band. She has been playing with her working band, the Eva Klesse Quartet, since 2013. The debut album “Xenon” was awarded an Echo Jazz in 2015. The jury explicitly honours her “decisive forcefulness” and her “story-telling talent”, probably in reference to the quartet’s forth album “Creatures & States”, which was released recently. It extends into the direction of Messiaen, Pärt and David Foster Wallace and, with tracks like “Brushing Hippopotami” and “Einsiedlerkrebs (hermit crab)”, exhibits an ambitioned mix of humour and self-reflection. Klesse will be playing with her quartet and has invited a special guest: guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel.
