Armenian pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan loves surprises and also loves being surprising - at which he successful because he is a talented artistic juggler and able to keep very many balls up in the air at the same time. He performed at Enjoy Jazz for the first time in 2012 where he also had a surprise in store. At the time he was a rising star, prized and praised by Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea and performed at the Alte Feuerwache in duo with live-sampling artist Jan Bang. The contact to the Norwegian “Punkt” Festival give birth to one of the most beautiful ECM albums of the 2010s: “Atmospheres” (2016). At the same time, as only virtuous jugglers are capable of doing, Hamasyan created an extensive piece out of many artistic projects, deepened his work with sacral music from his homeland („Luys I Luso“, 2015), released a debut album with powerful high energy-jazz-rock on the “Nonesuch” label (Mockroot“, 2015), and released a solo album in 2017. Meanwhile, Hamasyan is in his mid-thirties and surprised us with his trio album “The Call Within”, released during the pandemic. It is bassy, highly complex and dynamic prog jazz with a fusion of Armenian folklore, minimal music, psychedelics and rock. And so virtuous that it could even impress metal fans.
