Most people know composer and alto saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, born in 1993, as a member of the SEED Ensemble which combines jazz with West African and Caribbean music and is one of the flagships of the new British jazz scene. She also plays with Kokoroko – who performed at Enjoy Jazz two years ago – and Nérija. She also works with theatre, dance and film and switches between different musical worlds. In her latest project, un.procedure, she plays with pianist Piera Onacko and drummer/electronic artist Nathan England Jones, who both live in Birmingham. This constellation offers them great spaciousness and freedom to play. Free improvisation is at the core which is set on an electronic foundation and dense grooves. The trio is a small box of surprises, with their premiere being in Mannheim. They say you can look forward to an acoustic journey that travels through “early sci-fi soundtracks” all the way to “spiral-shaped krautrock passages”. Artist and photographer David Stanley, also from Birmingham, will accompany the concert with surreal visual projections.
