In 2016, Yussef Kamaal’s relaxed and highly danceable debut album “Black Focus” added fuel to the young British jazz scene. It combined fusion-jazz, funk und grime and reference projects like 4Hero. The Yussef Kamaal duo comprised keyboarder and producer Kamaal Williams aka Henry Wu and drummer Yussef Dayes. The Yussef Kamaal’s project ended shortly after it was distinguished as the “Breakthrough Act of the Year” at Jazz FM Awards. At the end of May 2018, Kamaal Williams returned with “The Return”. Being a little older than the “We Out Here” posse around Shabaka Hutchings and coming more from the club scene, he is placed more at the outskirts of the London scene. However, he adds an aesthetically related sound, like Kamasi Washington, Thundercat & Co. play in Los Angeles: i.e. hip-hop, broken beats, drum & bass and a love of 70s jazz-funk. Kamaal Williams tries to avoid using the term “jazz” for his music, preferring to call it “the essence of London Underground”.
