A first class dialogue! When bassist Richard Bona from Cameroon presented his Mandekan Project with a septet line up at the Enjoy Jazz Festival in mid-October 2017, he was enthusiastic about the Afro-Kuban musical-cultural melting pot. He describes it as an intercultural transit area which, over decades, developed on a colonial and racist foundation and, from this painful history, transformed into marvellous music. He sings Afro-Cuban sounds in his native language Duala. Since his performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006, his company has been managed by one of the most influential producers Quincy Jones who is mentor of the grand storyteller Alfredo Rodriguez. Bona can be heard on Rodriguez’ album “Tocororo” which narrates curiosity, freedom and a productive mixture of cultures. They are free spirits; related souls.
