Peter Guyer and Norbert Wiedmer’s highly recommendable music-travel-film documentation “Sounds and Silence” shows Gianluigi Trovesi and Gianni Coscia on tour. They are filmed in train stations and hotel breakfast rooms and are a rather odd couple, always joking around and following each other, finely attuned on stage and to each other. Watching them stirs memories of Beckett. Trovesi talks about magic that must have entered music once upon a time, in a moment of collective presence and remembrance because there were also moments in everyday life without music. Unthinkable today? For many years, the duo has been working virtuously and successfully at exploring this magic. The long bow spans between opera, art music, film music, jazz and culture, between freedom and austerity, earnestness and childish pleasure. In short: everything is possible from Verdi and Puccini through Nino Rota and Kurt Weill through to King Oliver and Benny Goodman. Umberto Eco, who valued the duo’s work tremendously once fittingly said: “There is nothing more seductive than finesse that is humble enough to disguise itself as naivety.”
