The Zurich Kantonalbank Jazz Prize, which has been awarded to young Swiss bands since 2003, may not be well known here. There are, however, prominent people on the jury, including David Murray in 2016, who in his laudatory speech for the prizewinner ensemble with pianist Marie Kruttli, born 1991, said “This young lady is phenomenal”. Marie Kruttli founded her first trio in 2010, while she was still doing her music studies in Lausanne. In 2015, they released their debut “Kartapousse”, and a second album “Running after the Sun” in 2017. Bassist Lukas Traxel has been playing with her for a long time, drummer Jonathan Barber, who she met in New York, joined them recently. Finely chiselled compositions, harmonious and occasionally extremely grooving, multi-layered rhythms. Critics feel reminded of Herbie Hancock, others hear Colin Vallon in her playing, and others sense a relationship to Marilyn Crispell. In one opinion they are, however, united: that she could become an important representative of the European scene.
