Imagine a boy around 12, 13 years old: it’s the 90s, he’s listening to Nirvana for the first time and obsesses with the drumming from Dave Grohl. With 15 he starts playing the drums. At one point he discovers Miles Davis, hears Tony Williams on the drums: “For me he was the one who kicked open the door to jazz.” Next to the jazz-door another opens: Squarepusher leads him into a bizarre sounds world. Why be content with one genre if you can combine all of them – jazz, electronica, rock. This way Mark Giuliana turned into one of the most playful, diverse, headstrong drummer. He performs with people like Avishai Cohen or Me’Shell Ndegeocelle, with Brad Mehldau they are the experimental duo Mehliana, plays in the quartet of Donny McCaslin which was responsible for the sound of David Bowie’s latest album “Blackstar”, works with his wife Gretchen Parlato and founded the label Beat Music. This also gives his electronic band its name. To combine the strictness of the electronic with the improvised sense of jazz – that’s the ideal of Beat Music.
