At the 2016 Enjoy Jazz’s opening concert, Mashrou´ Leila quickly turned the Stadthalle Heidelberg into Dancehall Highdelberg. What euphoria! In 2016, Masrou´ Leila, an indie rock band from Lebanon, was almost unknown and had played only a handful of concerts in Germany. Enjoy Jazz’s invitation of Mashrou´ Leila was thus a somewhat daring venture at the time and a political statement too: charismatic singer Hamed Sinno’s lyrics include both poetic and critical texts, voicing against nationalism, corruption, violence towards women and homosexuals and for religious freedom and tolerance in Arabic. The band’s name translates into “Nightly Project”. They are sensitive to intercultural and political projections and do not want to be seen as an Arab Spring band, but rather more as a one with clear positioning. In 2018, they will be playing the closing concert.
