Only a few musicians write their own evolving story in every album and performance in such a venturesome and reflected manner. Michael Wollny is one of them. And the Enjoy Jazz Festival has given him the necessary freedom to do so over the past few years. Consequently, Wollny was Enjoy Jazz’s first Artist in Residence in 2013, permitting him to experiment with different musical partners and formats to his hearts content. The concerts he played at the time had an effortless quality and lightness to them, highlighting the pianist’s versatility and curiosity, and how he boldly explores new fields. On the other hand, his trusted trio continues to grow and develop. They recorded two albums in a week, one in the famous Rainbow Studio in Oslo (also titled “Oslo”) and the other at a concert in the Wartburg (titled “Wartburg”). The two albums were never planned together, the format simply evolved. Wollny describes that this developed from trust in the joint process. We look forward to seeing this process continue in Ludwigshafen.
