Krzysztof Komeda + Tomasz Stanko + Manfred Eicher – the formula for the entering code of Polish jazz musicians into the international spotlight. In the case of the highly talented old saxophonist Maciej Obara, born 1981, the formula, which already worked for Marcin Wasilewski, affirmed once more. With the trio Obara won 2006 a young talents competition. The “ECM”-producer Manfred Eichner became aware of the musician and recommended him to the trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and Obara joined on his formations Special Project and New Balladyna Quartet. At the same time Obara was busy as leader of diverse projects, such as this Polish-Norwegian quartet since 2013 which released their first studio album “Unloved” 2017 with ECM and was praised by the critics. With his lyrical-balladic ductus, dominated by piano and saxophone, and the transparent production, “Unloved” sounds almost like an archetypical “ECM”-album. But don’t be fooled: in the later parts of the album you can find one, two pieces which show that the quartet has a high quality in improvising and knows who to make the cut.
