Since 2012, awarding the renowned “SWR-Jazzpreis” worth 15.000 € at the Enjoy jazz Festival with a concert by the prizewinner has been a small tradition. The jury nominated saxophonist Daniel Erdmann for the 2020 award. He was born in 1973 in Wolfsburg and studied with Gebhard Ullmann, amongst others, at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. He has gained international recognition with his originally lined up bands and projects like Erdmann 3000, Günter Adler and Das Kapital. He has also worked together with Vincent Courtois, Samuel Rohrer, Aki Takase and Heinz Sauer who have benefited from his distinctive sound. The jury said: “His opulent and robust sound is characteristic, the urgency of his playing is outstanding. (…) Daniel Erdmann is a stylistically unusually open and personal improviser, who (…) has found his way to sounds of great expression.” Daniel Erdmann will be performing in duet with Aki Takase in one set and with his trio Daniel Erdmann’s Velvet Revolution, unusually lined up with violin, viola, vibraphone and saxophone, on the other.
