In 2018, when The Sons of Kemet’s high-energy-live-performances both struck and polarised audiences, tuba player Theon Cross’s extensive solos formed reliable highlights. They are technically brilliant and athletic, connecting New Orleans, Calypso, Afrobeat, hip hop with contemporary bass music like Crime and dub step. Cross decided for the tuba early on and, in interviews, likes to describe how he transcribed Clifford Brown and Sonny Rollins’ solos or Paul Chambers’ bass solos into tuba playing, so as to impress the London jazz scene. And he was successful at it! Today, Cross is a central player in the London jazz scene, together with Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd and Kokoroko. He released his long-awaited and much celebrated debut “Fyah” this spring. Theon Cross has been guest at Enjoy Jazz before: on 16/11/ 2017 at the side of Moses Boyd and on 13/11/ 2018 with Sons of Kemet. And now we’re looking forward to “Fyah” in trio.
