Rémi Panossian : p
Maxime Delporte : b
Frédéric Petitprez : dr
The list of young European jazz pianists who bring along both the virtuousness of academically trained instrumentalists and a feel for the blue notes of jazz is growing longer and longer and attracting new listeners as well. Rémi Panossian also started playing piano as a child and found his way to jazz though Michel Pettrucciani’s influence. Born in 1983 in Montpellier, he studied at the local Jazz School and later then in Toulouse. He performed with several renowned musicians like Stéphane Kochoyan and Steve Coleman alongside his studies so to say. His own trio with Maxime Delporte on bass und Frédéric Petitprez on drums is not only described as facet-rich but also iconoclastic: This formation does not have all that much in common with a traditional jazz trio; the listening experiences, associations and aesthetic backgrounds are simply too varied and contemporary and provide fertile ground for a very open project. Their own compositions have strongly pronounced rhythms and grooves, full of momentum and raw energy which reminds one a little of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio. This music is irritable but in its most positive sense. As if something totally unexpected could happen at any time. And the great thing about it is: With this trio unexpected things happen all the time.
