Yo La Tengo, the trio from Hoboken in New Jersey which has existed since 1985, regularly releases consistently good to very good albums and is a legendary live band. Nevertheless, it has always stayed under the radar of big and hip fashion and is an insider tip. When the band came to life, their paragons were The Soft Boys, Mission of Burma and Love—and they experimented with connecting to second order psychedelia à la The Rain Parade and The Velvet Underground’s rugged noise experiments. Since then, not much has changed apart from stumbling across Gene Clark and Philly Soul, perfecting technical skills and occasionally happily demonstrating headstrong humour in their choice of cover versions. In their last live performance, the three multi-instrumentalists surprised their audiences with a stunningly brilliant acoustic set before they went on to show Neil Young how explosive guitar ROCK can sound. Great, perfectly matured American music, masterfully presented by three very likeable slackers that have come of age.
